Stories about Purgatorium: Robert Edgar Walton on Terminal

November 1, 2016

Welcome to the sixth blog in this series, where we'll explore the stories behind the stories in ID Press' inaugural anthology, Purgatorium - The Element of Horror.

The anthology will be released on January 22nd at the Copper Branch Restaurant in Brooklin (see the invite here), and is currently available for purchase through Amazon (in both hard copy and e-copy formats), as well as Kobo.

In this series, we'll be talking about the stories in the order in which they appear in the anthology. Today, we tackle Robert Edgar Walton and his story, Terminal...

Where did it come from?

The idea for Terminal came via a "Your Story" prompt on the Writer's Digest website back in May of 2013 . The prompt was, "Write the opening sentence (25 words or fewer) to a story based on the photo to the left." That photo, as you may have seen on Mel's blog post, was of an airplane taking off.

I was struck by how it just hung there in the picture. My entry was, "Paul stood in the silent terminal and stared out the window at the plane as it just hung there, neither landing nor taking off." I placed 9th overall.

I look at the world in snapshots. Each snapshot is a window into a much bigger, a more intimate story. So needless to say, I saw more to this picture that just what was shown. I could see around the picture frame, as it were, to the bigger picture.

It was my intention to write that story and submit it to one of Writer’s Digest's bigger contests. I never did get around to it.

When the idea for Purgatorium came up, it was a bad time for me. I wanted to contribute but my mind wasn’t in the space to be creative. So I shuffled through old stories, hoping to find one I could recycle.

I found this. It is a bit of a tribute to my dad. And the date in the story is the day he dropped dead in the grocery store parking lot. Thanks to some very quick thinking bystanders, he is still with us but I lost my mum shortly afterwards. That is an entirely different story for another time.

Purgatorium, ID Press and mostly Tobin Elliott saved my writing career. They kept me writing in a time when it was the last thing I wanted to do..

About Robert

Robert Edgar Walton is actually the pseudonym of Dale R. Long when he writes horror. When he's not being Robert, Dale writes "scary ghost stories and tales of the glories of Christmases long, long ago". He is actually an undercover elf.
